Touch it and this scout beetle beats its wings over 700 times a minute.
A nearly 8-inch tiger beetle reimagined as a scout machine: etched wings, detection lights, radar and compass on the carapace, and a turbojet for a tail. A 1,200 rpm motor drives both wings at once.
Why you'll love it
- ✓ Wings that really move. Over 700 beats a minute: a blur with structure in it.
- ✓ Etched, not printed. The vein pattern is cut into the wings, so it catches the light as they move.
- ✓ Sci-fi details. Detection lights, a radar array, a compass and a turbojet tail, none of which a real beetle has.
- ✓ A relaxing afternoon build. Intermediate level, about three hours, with the challenge all in the wing mechanism.
Great gift for insect lovers, sci-fi fans, gadget lovers and anyone who likes a desk piece that moves.
