Lisbon's yellow route 28 tram, built in wood, that pulls away from its own station.
A 1:24 tram with a side station, signal and overhead line. Work the lever a dozen times, release the brake, and it rolls 10 to 16 feet at a steady pace. No batteries.
Why you'll love it
- ✓ It really runs. A spring drive and multi-stage gearbox, with a retarding mechanism that keeps the speed even.
- ✓ A whole scene. Leave it at the station, trolley pole up to the wire, and it is a street corner in Lisbon.
- ✓ Details nobody had to include. A knob on the roof turns the destination board.
- ✓ Long rather than tricky. Rated 3 of 5 by the maker: patient work, and tools are in the box.
Great gift for Lisbon lovers, travelers, train and tram fans and anyone who likes a model that moves.

Build tips
- Keep a candle stub or crayon to wax the gearbox: a dry one is why a tram travels 3 feet instead of 16.
- Wind and run the carriage before the bodywork closes over the mechanism.
- Build the station second: it is the simpler half and a good way to finish.
Five hours to build. Then it leaves the station.
